Two interns join ABIR for the summer

Two Bermudian students have joined the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers as interns for the summer, with Malakye Outerbridge and Cree Dunn working with ABIR’s Policy and Regulatory team.

Dunn, 21, is pursuing a joint-honours bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Media, Communications and Economics at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. 

Outerbridge, 24, is studying for an undergraduate degree in Management of International Social Challenges (MISoC) at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Both are due to graduate in 2025. 

Collin Anderson, ABIR’s newly appointed Director of Policy and Regulation, a former recipient of the ACE/Robert Clements Scholarship, said: “We are pleased to have Cree and Malakye with us in the ABIR office this summer. They are already demonstrating their skills and enthusiasm. The re/insurance industry exposure, interaction with professionals and learning opportunities they gain will be valuable as they prepare to embark on their careers.”

John Huff, ABIR CEO, said: “Providing internships to Bermudian students is one of the ways in which ABIR and our member companies strengthen connections with the community and promote awareness, opportunity and relationships with the next generation of Bermudian leaders. ABIR member companies are proud to be hosting a record number of 108 paid Bermudian student interns this summer.

“About 70% of ABIR members’ Bermuda-based workforce is made up of Bermudians, spouses of Bermudians and permanent resident’s certificate holders and we are committed to keeping the pipeline of local talent flowing.” 

Dunn and Outerbridge will conduct policy and legal research for ABIR in addition to working on individual projects. They will also support the administration of the ABIR Intern Working Group, which will provide a series of events and workshops for ABIR member company interns on topics such as careers, interviewing skills and social-media profile-building.

Dunn said: “I am excited to be working with ABIR for a second summer as the position provides work experience in both aspects of my undergraduate degree, so there is a lot to learn. It's a great opportunity to observe in real time how re/insurance companies work together as an association and with stakeholders such as the government to address policy and regulatory concerns that affect the entire island." 

Outerbridge, who has a background in data analysis and statistical research, will use these skills to create insightful metrics for ABIR. He plans to study for a master’s degree from a Caribbean university before returning to Bermuda. 

Outerbridge said: “Working for ABIR is an amazing opportunity to gain insight into Bermuda’s re/insurance policy and regulatory process. I look forward to establishing connections within the private and public sectors and applying my knowledge within a Bermuda context.”
