ABIR hires Government tax advisor as new policy head

The Bermuda Government's top advisor on the implementation of Bermuda's corporate income tax has joined the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers as its director of policy and regulation.

Collin Anderson, who has held senior roles in government, the Bermuda Monetary Authority and in the re/insurance industry over the last 23 years, has spent the last year as a consultant to the Government of Bermuda with a primary focus on coordinating the project team to implement Bermuda’s Corporate Income Tax (CIT) for the Ministry of Finance.

His work on the execution of the new regime included policy, legislative, operations, communications, and financial matters.

ABIR said that in his new senior leadership position at the trade association for Bermuda's property and casualty re/insurance sector, Anderson will spearhead ABIR’s work representing the public policy interests of Bermuda international insurers and reinsurers that protect consumers around the world. He will lead ABIR’s public outreach agenda, research international public policy and insurance regulation developments, manage ABIR’s Hamilton office and serve as ABIR’s corporate secretary.

He will report to John Huff, ABIR’s CEO and the appointment is effective on July 1.

John Huff, CEO of ABIR, said: “Collin’s broad experience, encompassing public policy, regulation, legislation, executive management, property and casualty insurance and international affairs, makes him a perfect fit for this role. I am confident he will be a great asset to ABIR, as we continue to represent the public policy interests of Bermuda’s international insurers and reinsurers. We’re pleased to welcome Collin on board.”

Pina Albo, chair of ABIR and CEO of Hamilton, said: “Collin’s high level of technical and leadership skills, and his experience of public and private sectors, equip him well to serve our members. It speaks to the depth of talent we have in Bermuda that we were able to recruit such an ideal candidate locally. We are delighted to welcome Collin to ABIR.”

Anderson succeeds Suzanne Williams Charles, who has become the CEO of Bermuda international Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR), the trade association for the Bermuda long term re/insurance sector.

During nearly five years with the BMA, Anderson served as lead supervisor for several Bermuda insurance groups, handled companies under close monitoring, and engaged with international regulatory bodies. Most recently at the BMA, he served as Deputy Director of Strategy & International Affairs.

With the Government of Bermuda, he served as Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Economy and Labour, and Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of National Security. Anderson was also the founding Director of the Health Insurance Department in the Ministry of Health.

Before joining the Government of Bermuda, Anderson worked in various roles in the insurance industry in New York, Bermuda, Washington DC and London, including positions with the ACE Group of Companies (now Chubb Ltd.).

He was an ACE/Robert Clements Scholarship recipient and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from St John’s University, School of Risk Management.  He also holds an MBA from PACE University in New York.
