New reinsurance CEO for AXA XL
Bermuda domiciled re/insurer AXA XL has appointed Nancy Bewlay as chief executive of reinsurance. She takes over from Charles Cooper, who is stepping down after more than 20 years as a senior executive with the company’s reinsurance business.
Bewlay will lead AXA XL’s business across its property, casualty and specialty reinsurance lines. She brings over 30 years’ industry experience and has held numerous senior roles at XL Catlin and then at AXA XL.
Bewlay joined XL Catlin in 2017 as global chief underwriting officer for casualty and was most recently global chief underwriting officer responsible for AXA XL’s underwriting governance, pricing and P&L globally.
Previous roles include head of casualty underwriting at Swiss Re, leading the underwriting and actuarial treaty teams in the US and Canada, and president and CEO of C.V. Starr & Company (California).
Scott Gunter, AXA XL’s chief executive officer, welcomed the appointment: “Nancy is an accomplished leader and her extensive experience in portfolio management, underwriting governance and pricing will ensure the continued performance of our reinsurance book.”
Gunter thanked Cooper for his “dedication and pragmatism” in leading the company’s reinsurance business. “He has played an important part in our AXA XL journey, and we wish him the best for the future.”
