HSCM promotes CFO to COO in reshuffle

Hudson Structured Capital Management has shuffled its top management as it looks to expand.

Jeff Sangster, who has been chief financial officer since joining HSCM from Validus in 2019, will become chief operating officer and will continue to be head of strategy.

HSCM said Sangster would oversee all non-investment functions for the firm including finance, human resources, legal, compliance, and corporate operations.

Sangster will continue to be head of strategy where he will be supported by Matt Berdoff, who has been named deputy COO.

The company said Berdoff has been with HSCM since its inception in 2016, serving as the firm’s head of investor relations. He will continue to operate as head of IR while expanding his work alongside Sangster to lead the non-investment functions and strategic initiatives onshore.

Bernard Opoku has also been named managing director and chief financial officer replacing Sangster as the leader of the firm’s finance function.

Opoku has been with HSCM since 2018, when he joined as a controller on the finance team. Prior to being named CFO, he served as managing director and chief accounting officer. Before joining HSCM, Opoku worked for KPMG in Bermuda where he served as senior manager and a key member of KPMG’s Insurance Linked Securities practice.

In other appointments, Andrew Sagon has been promoted to managing director at HSCM and partner in HSCM Ventures, the firm’s insurtech-focused venture capital arm. Sagon joined HSCM in 2018 from Willis Towers Watson and has served as a managing director at HSCM since 2021. He will work closely with founding partner Vikas Singhal and managing partner and co-founder Michael Millette in managing the HSCM Ventures portfolios.

Millette said: “We are thrilled to have Jeff stepping up to COO. Together with Matt, Jeff’s leadership will help guide HSCM’s growth trajectory thoughtfully and strategically in the coming years. Bernard has done a wonderful job since joining our team five years ago and I cannot think of a better fit to take over for Jeff in the CFO seat.”

Sangster said: “I am excited for this next step at HSCM and look forward to working closely with Michael, Matt, and our extremely talented team to support our investment teams and continue to deliver value for our clients.”

Singhal added: “Andrew has been a key contributor to the success of HSCM’s venture platform since joining the firm, and we are delighted to continue our work with him to lead and build HSCM Ventures.”
