Carbon taps Sompo for head of specialty role

Carbon Underwriting, the independent managing general underwriter (MGA) and Lloyd’s syndicate, has appointed a head of specialty.

Dale Willetts (pictured) was executive vice president, head of specialty lines, for Sompo International for five years where he built an A&H portfolio. He also held senior roles with ANV, Travelers and other specialty underwriters.

His job will be to spearhead the development and growth of Carbon’s Accident & Health (A&H) proposition, in addition to supporting the development of Carbon’s technology capabilities.

Nick Tye, CEO at Carbon, commented: “I am delighted that Dale has joined us to take up this key role. His deep understanding of the market, breadth of insurance knowledge and proven track record in senior leadership roles make him ideally placed to develop our capabilities across the Specialty portfolio.

“He will be a valuable addition to our leadership team and I know that we will benefit enormously from his expertise, insights and business acumen.”

Willetts said: “I am thrilled to be joining Carbon at such an exciting time in its development. The company’s focus on transforming the delegating underwriting market by implementing superior in-house technology that supports quality underwriting, the ambition of its people and the entrepreneurial culture made my decision to join the business extremely easy.

“There are exciting opportunities in the market for nimble, forward-thinking companies like Carbon and I am looking forward to bringing my extensive sector experience and passion for innovation as the business evolves.”
