Bermuda gaining recognition as key partner for Japanese insurers: PwC

Bermuda’s reinsurance market is increasingly being recognised as an important partner for Japanese insurers, according to Damian Cooper, partner, insurance at PwC Bermuda.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 Bermuda International Life & Annuity Conference, hosted by the Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR) on September 28-29 in Hamilton, Cooper said discussions during the recent East Asia Insurance Conference (EAIC) in Tokyo had highlighted the role Bermuda can play as Japanese insurers respond to changing market conditions.

“One of the positive themes from my discussions is the continued recognition of the Bermuda reinsurance market as an important partner for the Japanese insurance industry,” Cooper said.

“The market’s ability to provide both capital diversification and deep risk expertise continues to support insurers as they pursue their strategic objectives and respond to changing market conditions.”

The relationship with Asian markets is set to be among the themes discussed at Bermuda International Life & Annuity Conference, which is expected to attract more than 700 delegates.

The conference comes as Bermuda’s long-term re/insurance sector continues to examine opportunities for international growth alongside the regulatory and structural developments shaping the market.

Bermuda’s regulatory competitiveness, geopolitical and demographic trends and structural innovation are also expected to feature in discussions, alongside the jurisdiction’s growing role in Asian insurance markets.

Cooper said Bermuda’s ability to attract international capital and develop solutions for complex risks remained central to the market’s proposition.

“Bermuda continues to demonstrate the strength of its life re/insurance market through its ability to attract global capital, support innovation and provide solutions to some of the industry’s most complex challenges,” he said.
