AIG makes former AIG Re CEO its chief risk officer

American International Group has appointed former AIG Re and Validus chief executive officer Chris Schaper (pictured) to be the company's chief risk officer.

Schaper, who oversaw Bermuda-based Validus and AlphaCat until they were sold to RenaissanceRe last year has been acting CRO since September and global chief underwriting officer since November 2023.

As CRO, Schaper will oversee AIG’s global enterprise risk management organisation, including the company’s risk management strategy, policies and practices. He will continue to serve as global CUO, in an interim capacity, until a successor is appointed.

In his new role, he will report to Peter Zaffino, AIG chairman and chief executive officer.

“I have known Chris for over 25 years, and his deep understanding of our industry and expertise in risk management have helped shape our culture of underwriting excellence,” said Zaffino.

“I am confident that under Chris’ leadership, our risk organization will further enhance our enterprise risk framework to address the evolving global risk landscape.”

Schaper also served in senior leadership roles at Montpelier Re, Endurance Specialty Insurance and GE Capital.
