Tornari named managing director of Bermuda law firm
Commercial litigator Katie Tornari has been appointed to be managing director of Bermuda law firm Marshall Diel & Myers.
The firm, which has a prominent re/insurance litigation practice, also promoted fellow litigator Christina Herrero to be director.
Tornari has over 23 years' experience in commercial litigation with a particular focus on complex, high value and cross-jurisdictional commercial disputes and insolvencies. She also has expertise in insurance and reinsurance disputes and regularly acts in disputes relating to trusts, financial institutions, funds, professional negligence, directors and shareholders, employment, personal injury and medical negligence.
She has been at MDM since 2008 and was previously a solicitor at Edward Angell Palmer & Dodge in London from 1999 to 2008.
A spokesperson said: “The growing firm now has a team of 39, including 19 lawyers, and boasts one of the top litigation teams in Bermuda with an international reputation as the go-to firm for complex, multi-jurisdictional commercial litigation, matrimonial & family law and property law.
“Some 82% of MDM’s staff are Bermudian and the firm is committed to providing a home for the next generation of talented Bermudian lawyers as it continues to scale up operations.
“Katie has played an integral role in the firm’s management and future direction for over 12 years."
The spokesperson added: “Tina advises both a domestic and international client base on civil and commercial litigation, including insolvencies, employment and human rights law. She serves as the Chair of the Human Rights Tribunal, has experience in alternative dispute resolution and is a qualified fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and former Chair (and now Vice-Chair) of the Bermuda branch.
“She was called to the Texas Bar in 2013 and practiced as a litigation attorney in the US before returning home to Bermuda in 2017 and joining MDM in 2018.”
Tornari said: “Tina’s promotion is well deserved and a reflection of her hard work and dedication. She is an exceptional lawyer and a trusted adviser to her clients. Her promotion represents our continued commitment to the firm’s expansion.
“I’m proud to be taking up the position of managing director at what is an exciting time for the firm. Our reputation for taking on complex, cross-jurisdictional and often high-profile disputes continues to grow and we are building amazing teams across litigation, property, estate planning and family. As a firm, we are committed to recruiting, training and developing the next generation of Bermudian lawyers and training our juniors to become future leaders of our firm.”
Herrero added: “MDM is committed to training, developing and recruiting Bermudian lawyers like myself and supporting Bermudian law students in their studies. We are also keen to help qualified Bermudian lawyers practicing abroad to come back to the island. The firm has plans for further growth in our key practice areas over the coming year and I’m delighted to be part of these exciting plans following my promotion to director.”
