Rising Star Shakeem Albouy

Shakeem Albouy was not sure what career he wanted to pursue when he entered the workforce, but early training in technology and software development turned out to be a springboard into insurance.

Tell us about your career to date.

My employment journey began as a front desk agent at Grotto Bay Beach Resort, where I quickly realized I was not destined for a career in the hotel industry. This led me to explore FinTech courses and eventually enroll in the first full-stack web development course at Bermuda College. During this time, I developed an application to track health metrics for diabetic patients at North Shore Medical. This technical foundation took me to Kigali, Rwanda, where I taught students coding. Leveraging these skills, I transitioned into the re/insurance industry at Hamilton Re as an Underwriting Assistant, managing data analytics for various reinsurance exposures. After 18 months, I moved to AXA XL as a Professional Lines Underwriter, further deepening my expertise in the field.

How did you come to choose a career in re/insurance?

My transition into re/insurance happened by chance — a combination of being in the right place at the right time with the right preparation. While my early career path was uncertain, my engagement with technology and its applications in business contexts prepared me ideally for this field. This merging of preparation and opportunity provided the perfect launching pad for a rewarding career in insurance.

What makes the re/insurance industry attractive to young professionals?

The re/insurance industry holds significant appeal for young professionals by offering financial independence and the opportunity to work with well-known global companies. It also provides potential for international relocation and clear pathways for career advancement, making it an ideal field for ambitious individuals seeking rapid professional growth and diverse experiences.

What are the opportunities and challenges you’ve faced?

Navigating technological change at AXA XL has provided me with unique opportunities and personal challenges. The opportunity to contribute to our digital transformation has been a highlight of my career. A particular milestone was being given the chance to travel to NYC to work alongside our US cyber team. This experience not only allowed me to learn from top experts in the field but also to discuss Bermuda's role in AXA's global strategy. Personally, I've had to rapidly upskill and adapt to new technologies and methodologies, which has pushed me to grow both professionally and technically. These experiences have not only enhanced my capabilities but also allowed me to play a pivotal role in shaping our company’s future.

Was there someone who inspired you or acted as a mentor in your career?

Jahde Eve, a pivotal figure in my professional journey, shifted from finance on Wall Street to web development in Silicon Valley, subsequently spearheading the Longtail coding bootcamp in Bermuda. His mentorship has been crucial in navigating the intersecting worlds of technology and finance, providing ongoing guidance and insights into the latest tech trends.

What differences does your generation bring to the industry?

Our generation introduces a mix of diverse skills and perspectives that are reshaping the re/insurance industry. We bring fresh approaches to problem-solving and risk assessment, fostering innovation and improving traditional practices. Our varied backgrounds help us offer creative solutions that enhance the industry’s resilience and adaptability.

Is the industry welcoming to younger people?

While receptiveness to young professionals can vary by company, the overall industry recognises the need for fresh talent to sustain its future. It is crucial for young professionals to take initiative — by leading projects or innovating independently — to demonstrate their value and stand out. Companies that encourage and reward such proactive efforts create an environment where ambitious young professionals can thrive.

What are your career goals?

I am committed to becoming an executive at AXA XL, where I plan to mentor the next generation of underwriters while also leading technological initiatives to continually improve the underwriting process.

If you had chosen a different career, what would it have been?

Had I not pursued a career in re/insurance, my path might have veered towards research and development in cognitive psychology. With a keen interest in brain function, I would have concentrated on researching how social media platforms can influence cognitive processes and behaviours. or, I would have been drawn to projects aimed at developing solutions to help paraplegics regain mobility, blending neuroscience with cutting-edge technology to create life-changing applications.
