Rising Star Adrian Faries

Adrian Faries received a unique insight into the re/insurance industry when the 29-year-old FINEX broker joined Willis (Bermuda) at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Give us a snapshot of your career to date.

I started in the industry as an XL Casualty Intern for  three years (summer and winter breaks while in university). Upon graduating, I transitioned to a role at Hamilton Trust Company, where I served as a corporate administrator for two years. This experience provided me with valuable insights into the financial services sector and skills in client relations and administrative management. I joined WTW over three years ago where I have had the privilege of being a part of the FINEX (financial, professional and executive risks) team. In this role, I've focused primarily on Cyber placements.

How did you come to choose a career in re/insurance?

My decision to pursue a career in re/insurance was deeply influenced by my upbringing in Bermuda, which is renowned for its pivotal role in the global insurance market for decades. From an early age, I was captivated by the dynamic and innovative nature of the industry, and the integral role Bermuda played in shaping its evolution. For me, choosing a career in re/insurance was not just a professional decision but a personal calling driven by a deep-seated admiration for Bermuda's rich legacy. I am honoured to be a part of this industry and remain dedicated to upholding its principles.

What makes the re/insurance industry attractive to young professionals?

The combination of job security, networking opportunities, and the recognition of transferable skills makes the re/insurance industry an attractive and rewarding choice for young professionals looking to build a successful and fulfilling career.

What are the opportunities and challenges you’ve faced?

When I joined WTW in 2021, it was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, I encountered both opportunities and challenges that has significantly shaped my professional journey. Our team swiftly adapted to 100% remote work during the initial six months that I started at WTW.

This transition period provided a unique opportunity for focused dedication to my role. Without the distractions of the traditional office environment, I was able to immerse myself fully in understanding the intricacies of the book under management. This period of intense focus empowered me to develop a comprehensive understanding of our operations and enhance my effectiveness in meeting our client needs. Also, amidst the uncertainty surrounding WTW's potential merger with Aon, I encountered a dynamic environment of high turnover and evolving responsibilities.

While navigating this period had its challenges, it opened doors to new opportunities for growth and development. I seized these opportunities with enthusiasm, leveraging each challenge as a chance to expand my skill set, take on additional responsibilities and contribute meaningfully to the organisation's objectives. In retrospect, the challenges I faced during this time served as catalysts for personal and professional growth, reinforcing my resilience, adaptability, and commitment. I emerged from these experiences with a heightened sense of purpose and a deepened appreciation for the opportunities afforded to me within the dynamic landscape of the insurance industry.

Was there someone who inspired you or acted as a mentor in your career?

Throughout my time at XL, I had long admired Noel Pearman for his expertise and leadership within the industry. Although I didn't initially have the chance to collaborate directly with him, I'm delighted to share that our paths have since intersected, and I now have the privilege of working closely with Noel on various deals.

Noel has been an exceptional mentor, offering invaluable insights and guidance that have greatly enriched my professional journey. His wealth of knowledge and experience has been instrumental in deepening my understanding of complex coverage matters, and I'm grateful for his unwavering support and willingness to share his expertise. I'm honoured to have him as a trusted advisor and colleague.

What differences does your generation bring to the industry?

Our generation brings a unique set of qualities and perspectives to the insurance industry, particularly in the realm of technology and adaptability. Growing up in an era defined by rapid technological advancement, we possess a natural affinity for innovation and a deep understanding of how technology can transform traditional practices.

Is the industry welcoming to younger people?

Absolutely! From my experience, I've found the insurance industry to be incredibly welcoming and supportive of younger professionals. There's a genuine recognition that the youth represent the future of our industry, and as such, there's a concerted effort to attract, mentor, and empower emerging talent.

What are your career goals?

I aspire to prioritise the development of meaningful, long-lasting connections within the industry. I believe that cultivating strong relationships is not only essential for personal and professional growth but also critical for driving success and innovation in the dynamic world of insurance. I am also committed to continuous learning and growth, seeking out opportunities to expand my knowledge base and skills set.

If you had chosen a different career, what would it have been?

I truly believe the insurance industry is where I belong. It offers a unique blend of analytical rigour, strategic thinking, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. It provides constant learning opportunities, and the chance to contribute to something larger than myself.
