Reinsurers donate eight ventilators to Bermudian hospitals

Athene Life Re and its parent company Athene Holding have partnered with Athora Holding, Aspen Insurance Holdings and Catalina Holdings, to acquire eight life-assisting ventilators for the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB).

The re/insurers donated more than $400,000 to fund the purchase of equipment that is essential to treat patients with acute cases of COVID-19.

BHB is a consortium of three medical facilities providing comprehensive healthcare treatment and rehabilitative services on the island.

Bill Wheeler, president of Athene, said: "Widespread shortages of essential medical equipment have created a challenge for our local hospital. BHB identified that there was an urgent need for these additional ventilators.”

Venetta Symonds, CEO and president of BHB, noted that there is still no cure for COVID-19, making it even more important that hospitals are able to provide breathing support where needed. “The eight ventilators we can source from this donation will help us save lives,” said Symonds.
