Cyber hires for Ariel Re and Mosaic as Occam loses staff

Bermuda-based reinsurer Ariel Re has hired Daniel Carr as head of cyber. Based in its London office, Carr joins from Occam Underwriting. The London-based MGA specialises in cyber, power and space risks but has seen a number of its cyber team jump ship.

Carr served as its chief innovation officer and cyber lead. Before that, he worked as a cyber security specialist with Lloyd’s syndicate AEGIS London. He began his career as a cyber security advisor for the Ministry and Defence and security consultant for BAE Systems.

“Ariel Re’s goal is to gain a deeper understanding of the evolving cyber liability landscape while bringing innovative solutions and meaningful capacity to our clients,” said Ariel Re CEO Ryan Mather.

“Daniel brings a wealth of Cyber underwriting expertise, as well as a deep technical understanding of cyber exposures.”

The announcement coincided with Mosaic Insurance’s that it had appointed Occam’s George Cole as assistant vice president and underwriter for international cyber. Cole was previously an assistant underwriter at Occam. It also follows the departure of Occam’s cyber security director and underwriting lead, George Paraskeva, who joined Ryan Specialty Group MGA Emergin Risk last month.

At Mosaic, Cole will be joined by Lucy Barker-Hahlo, hired as a junior underwriter. She was previously an assistant underwriter at EmergIn Risk.

Both new hires will report to James Tuplin, head of international cyber at Mosaic.

The private equity-backed start-up, which recently celebrated six months of operations, is developing the international cyber portfolio in London, Continental Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. Mosaic began underwriting global cyber coverage from Chicago in April, just two months after launching with headquarters in Bermuda, a new Lloyd’s syndicate, 1609, and a network of underwriting hubs in the US, UK and Asia.

The London cyber team is the product’s first international unit.

“With the cyber market rapidly hardening in 2021, and rate increases of between 40 and 50 per cent on average now being seen, we feel this is a perfect time to grow our international cyber team,” said Mosaic’s global head of cyber, Yosha DeLong.

“Building on our London unit bolsters our bench strength in market-leading talent and allows us to powerfully grow our global cyber offering.”
