Markel strengthens D&O operations with MD Sandra Soares’ promotion

Markel has expanded the role of its longstanding managing director to boost operations following the shift of its US directors’ & officers’ (D&O) platform to Bermuda.

Sandra Soares (pictured) has been appointed chief operating officer of Markel’s Bermuda office and head of professional liability, pending customary regulatory approval.

In the dual role, she will oversee the Bermuda office’s strategic operations and lead its professional liability team and strategy.

Earlier this year, under Soares’s leadership, Markel shifted its US public D&O and large financial institutions coverage to its Bermuda professional liability platform, part of a wider shake-up of its US professional liability underwriting.

Soares has nearly 18 years of experience with Markel, having held senior roles including head of executive assurance international, head of Bermuda executive assurance, and senior vice president for professional liability.
