Hurricane Lee expected to pass Bermuda on Friday

A weakening but still dangerous Hurricane Lee is expected to pass about 165 miles west of Bermuda early on Friday morning.

It is currently  575 miles south of Bermuda moving north-northwest at 7mph. At 6am Bermuda time, it was a category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 115 mph gusting to 140 mph. It is expected weaken to category 2 storm as it hits colder waters on Wednesday and to be a category 1 storm by Friday morning.

The Bermuda Weather Service is reporting dangerous swells and rip currents along the south and east shores in association with the Hurricane Lee.

“Conditions will rapidly deteriorate during Thursday through Friday as Lee draws closer and passes just west of Bermuda,” the BWS said.

It forecast 40 to 60mph winds with 75mph gusts overnight on Thursday.

Conditions are supposed to improve as Lee moves to the north, with 45 to 55mph winds gusting to 70 knots on Friday morning, before easing in the afternoon.

Acting Minister of National Security David Burch said: "We urge the public to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prepare their homes and properties.

"Residents should have used this past weekend to prepare and secure their homes. If you have not done so, then now is the time to complete those preparations so that you are ready for Hurricane Lee.”
