The next generation playbook

For the next generation entering Bermuda’s re/insurance sector, the message from today’s industry professionals is clear: stay curious, stay connected and stay adaptable. The landscape is evolving quickly and the most successful young professionals will be those who combine strong technical foundations with a forward-looking mindset.

Never stop learning is the recurring message pulled from Bermuda:Re+ILS’s recent survey data. Whether it’s deepening technical skills, understanding the mechanics of underwriting or strengthening communication and leadership capabilities, continuous development is essential. Rising stars are urged to “learn to solve problems… not just point them out”, and build depth in expertise while pairing it with adaptability and curiosity.

Technology is reshaping the industry, and future leaders must “harness the power of data, analytics and AI to effectively compete”. At the same time, they should “keep a firm foot in both the detail and specifics of the industry as well as the fast-paced and changing digital and data environments”. It’s a dual fluency that will define the professionals who thrive.

Networking continues to matter, particularly given the island’s unique ecosystem. Building strong relationships across Bermuda’s collaborative market opens doors, accelerates learning and fosters a sense of community. As one survey respondent put it: “You never know who you will meet and how your paths will cross now and in the future.” Internships, mentorships, scholarships and industry events offer early exposure and help young people find the place in the sector that suits them best.

Several respondents emphasised entering the industry early to gain a holistic understanding, while others encouraged rising talent simply to “stick with it… you don't have to have it all figured out”. Persistence and a willingness to challenge yourself, and the status quo, will carry far. “Don’t take ‘this is how we’ve always done it’ as an answer,” one respondent said. Instead, learn from every experience and when you progress, remember what you didn’t like in previous roles and “strive not to put others in that position”.

Beyond skills and networks, integrity remains a cornerstone of Bermuda’s success. The jurisdiction’s re/insurance market is built on trust, ethics and expertise. Young professionals are encouraged “never to lose sight of integrity and purpose”, and to give back through mentorship, volunteering or contributing to initiatives that strengthen the sector.

In short: learn, connect, adapt and lead with purpose. For those willing to embrace opportunity and innovation, the future of Bermuda’s re/insurance industry is wide open and waiting to be shaped by the next generation.
