XL Group appoints head of surplus lines general liability

Matthew Huels has joined XL Group’s surplus lines team as vice president and head of general liability.

Based in Chicago, he reports to XL Group’s surplus lines president Roxanne Mitchell, who said: “to successfully serve hard-to-place risks that rely on the surplus lines market, you need intuitive, seasoned underwriters.  That’s why we’re pleased to attract the underwriting talent that we do.

“Matt has an impressive track record for addressing tough industry risks and doing it while building strong and profitable books of business. We are looking forward to seeing Matt put his experience and underwriting skills to work for our clients who rely on XL Group for strong general liability coverage,” she said.

Huels brings ten years of underwriting experience to the role. He joins XL from insurance group CoverX Specialty, also based in Chicago, where he served as vice president and Midwest primary casualty manager.

“Over the last 18 months, we’ve expanded our team and product lines to offer our clients more comprehensive service and coverage,” Mitchell continued.

“All this effort and team building has put us in a strong position at a very opportune time in the market. More businesses are looking to the surplus lines market to address their unusual or more difficult risk management concerns and XL has the products and underwriting resources to do it right.”
