Startups and cat leading to welcome talent surge in Bermuda

Global brokers outlined their commitment to Bermuda yesterday (March 7) as they discussed trends at the Bermuda Risk Summit.

Ben Radford, head of Gallagher Re on the Island, told a panel discussion: “You think of cat, you think of Bermuda. It’s the reality. It has a huge job to perform. There’s been a major migration of talent out to this area.
“A lot of startups have focused and geared around Bermuda so it’s going to have an important part to play. Hopefully for the longer term it will continue to grow and expand.”

The session, titled “The Global Capacity Crunch of 2023”, took place on the second day of the Summit at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

It was moderated by John Huff, chief executive officer of the Association of Bermuda Insurers & Reinsurers. Radford was joined by Chris Bonard, chief executive officer of ED Broking (Bermuda); Jim Fiore, executive managing director of Aon; and Lara Mowery, global head of distribution at Guy Carpenter.

Radford said hiring Bermudians was “very much front and centre of our mind”.

He said: “How do we engage with the local community and get more local hires into the office?

“It’s hugely beneficial to be here. The market’s right here. It’s where a lot of the activity is moving towards, and a lot of the investment. That will form a core pillar in our strategy as we build out.”

Bonard said: “It’s incumbent upon us to make sure we continue this Island’s legacy and put investment and training into the next generation. Hopefully that’s a local generation of local talent.”
