Bernina’s Paul Hertelendy joins Echo Re

Swiss-based reinsurer Echo Re has announced that Bernina Re’s Paul Hertelendy will be its new chief underwriting officer.

Hertelendy served as chief reinsurance investment officer of Bermuda-based Bernina until the start of 2021 and was also CEO of its Zurich branch. The last year he has been a senior consultant for global property catastrophe and third party capital with SCOR.

He will join Echo Re on 1 March, succeeding Piotr Nowakowski, who is leaving the company.

“We very much thank Piotr for his contribution to develop Echo Re’s Underwriting activities throughout the last few years and wish him all the best for his professional and private future”, said Gilles Meyer, CEO of Echo Re. “At the same time, we are very pleased to welcome Paul Hertelendy as our future Chief Underwriting Officer, who will join us on 1 March 2022. With his track record and deep expertise of both P&C and specialty lines, he is the ideal candidate to further develop Echo Re’s growing footprint together with our strong underwriting team.”

Hertelendy has 25 years’ experience in re/insurance. Before heading its Bermuda-based carrier, he was managing director and head of reinsurance at Credit Suisse. He has also served as chief underwriting officer for SCOR’s specialty lines and Converium. He started in insurance with PartnerRe as a catastrophe modeller and underwriter.
