Can you start by telling us what inspired your career?
My path to law was not one I had mapped out from the beginning. I studied criminology for my bachelor’s degree, and one module focused on law. I found myself really enjoying it – the structure, the reasoning and the way it connected to real-world issues. From there, pursuing law felt like a natural progression.
As I learned more, I realised it was a career where I could combine analytical skills with problem-solving, and where I’d have the opportunity to contribute to sectors like re/insurance that are so central to Bermuda’s economy.
Give us a snapshot of your career to date.
I was called to the Bermuda Bar in November 2021 and joined Appleby’s corporate team. Over the past few years, I have had the opportunity to advise on a range of transactions and regulatory matters within the sector, working with both established market players and new entrants. The pace of the industry and the diversity of matters that come across my desk have given me a solid grounding in corporate law as well as deep exposure to the re/insurance market, which is such a central pillar of Bermuda’s economy.
As a lawyer, what drew you to a specialisation in re/insurance?
Bermuda is one of the world’s leading re/insurance hubs, so pursuing a career in this space was a natural fit. What drew me specifically was the dynamic nature of the industry – it’s constantly evolving in response to global risks, regulation and innovation. I was also attracted by the chance to work on high-value, cross-border transactions that have real-world impact.
What makes the re/insurance industry attractive to young professionals?
The industry offers an international outlook and exposure to complex, cutting-edge issues. For young professionals, it’s exciting to be part of a sector that blends law, finance and global risk management. There’s also the appeal of being at the heart of Bermuda’s economy, with opportunities to build meaningful networks both locally and globally.
What are the opportunities and challenges you’ve faced?
One of the biggest challenges has been navigating a highly demanding and fast-paced environment as a young professional. The re/insurance industry is rigorous and often requires you to adapt quickly, think critically and perform at a very high standard. Being successful at a relatively young age is rewarding, but it also comes with added pressure – balancing expectations, managing responsibility and, at times, needing to prove yourself in spaces where experience is valued so highly.
That said, the pace and intensity of the industry have also pushed me to grow quickly and to develop resilience. The challenge of being “young in the room” is real, but it has also been an opportunity to show that hard work, preparation and fresh perspective can make a meaningful contribution.
Who has inspired you or acted as a mentor in your career so far?
I am fortunate to have Brad Adderley, office managing partner, as one of the most influential figures in my professional journey.
What really sets Adderley apart, and what I deeply admire, is his generosity with time and insight, even when he’s managing an incredibly full schedule. Adderley leads by example through his tireless work ethic and unwavering drive. I’m deeply grateful to him for investing in my development. His mentorship has helped shape not only how I approach complex matters, but also how I aspire to lead and support others as my career progresses.
What does your generation bring to the industry?
I think my generation brings a fresh perspective on technology, innovation and diversity. We’re more accustomed to thinking about issues such as sustainability, inclusion and digital transformation and we want to see those values reflected in the way business is conducted.
Is the industry welcoming to younger people?
Absolutely. While it’s a highly technical industry, I’ve found it values energy, curiosity and commitment. Many organisations in Bermuda are actively investing in training and development, which shows that the industry recognises the importance of attracting and retaining young talent.
What are your career goals?
To continue to build my expertise in the re/insurance space and take on more leadership in client-facing work. Long term, it’s to be recognised as a trusted adviser in the market and to contribute to Bermuda’s continued position as a global leader in re/insurance.
Equally important to me is giving back by mentoring young students and aspiring lawyers. I’ve benefited greatly from the guidance of mentors throughout my own career, and I believe it’s essential to create the same opportunities for the next generation. Whether through formal programmes or simply taking the time to share advice and encouragement, I hope to support students in seeing what’s possible and in building the confidence to pursue their goals.
If you had chosen a different career, what would it have been?
Honestly, I’ve always had a wide range of interests, so I’m not entirely sure which path I would have taken. I could see myself in business or international relations, given my curiosity about global markets and how different economies and cultures interact.
At the same time, I’ve always enjoyed dance and other sports, which have taught me discipline, perseverance and the value of teamwork – lessons that I carry into my professional life every day. Whatever direction I might have chosen, I know it would have involved helping others and giving back, whether through mentoring, coaching or supporting others in discovering their own passions. That said, reflecting on my experiences and passions, I am certain that I am in the right career.
How do you stay motivated and continue to learn in such a dynamic sector?
For me, motivation comes from the fact that no two days are ever the same. The re/insurance industry is constantly evolving; whether it’s regulatory developments, innovative structures or responses to global risks, and that pushes me to keep learning. I stay motivated by approaching each matter as a chance to deepen my knowledge and refine my skills. Having strong mentors and colleagues also helps; being part of a team where knowledge is shared and where growth is encouraged makes it easier to stay engaged and committed.
In what ways do you think Bermuda can maintain or strengthen its global relevance in re/insurance?
Bermuda has already built an impressive reputation as one of the world’s leading re/insurance hubs, but maintaining and strengthening that position requires continued innovation and adaptability.
Supporting emerging areas such as insurtech, ESG-focused products and life insurance structures will help ensure Bermuda remains at the forefront of industry trends.
At the same time, investing in local talent is key. Creating pathways for young Bermudians to build careers in the sector helps ensure the industry remains sustainable and dynamic. By combining innovation with inclusivity, Bermuda can continue to distinguish itself on the global stage.
