MS Amlin names heads for four of its five specialty divisions

MS Amlin has made four appointments to its new specialty business, following a reorganisation designed to establish the group as a world-class insurance business focusing on specialty and reinsurance risks.

John Roberts-West has been named head of property, while Laurence Humberstone becomes head of marine. Jason Herriott joins as head of crisis management, with Julian Samuel taking the position of head of natural resources.

The appointments fill four out of five specialty business divisions. The search for a head of its final division, casualty, is ongoing.

The four appointments all report to Mark Clements and Andrew Wright, co-chief underwriting officers of MS Amlin Underwriting.

Roberts-West joined MS Amlin in 2015 and was previously product group leader for its North American and international property portfolio.

Humberstone also joined MS Amlin in 2015 and was previously specie product group leader and regional manager for specie, war, terrorism and hull.

Herriott, who is responsible for leading specific client portfolios to deliver against the crisis management business plan, was previously product group leader for war, terrorism, political risks and allied perils at MS Amlin.

Samuel is new to MS Amlin and joins from Markel International syndicate 3000 / MIICL, where he was responsible for all aspects of underwriting and strategy for the natural resources business.

The heads of the divisions are responsible for the design and implementation of the strategy and underwriting approach within their business divisions from February 1, except Samuel who joins MS Amlin later in the month.

Tom Clementi, CEO of MS Amlin Underwriting, said the promotions demonstrate the deep bench of talent and expertise already present within the MS Amlin team, while the external appointment shows its ability to attract leading industry talent.

“The specialty business will bring together our marine, property and casualty insurance teams to form part of a global specialty franchise across London, the Middle East, the Far East and continental Europe,” Clementi said.

“Under the new structure we aim to provide a more holistic view of risk for our clients by bringing all specialty capabilities under one roof,” he added.
