Hamilton Re opens doors to student recruits

Hamilton Re is inviting applications from college-aged students who are interested in participating in the company’s Summer 2018 intern programme.

Reporting to the catastrophe modelling team, the internship programme provides an opportunity for two undergraduate students to spend eight to 10 weeks with Hamilton Re.

“The internship programme aims to increase the pool of qualified Bermudians entering the insurance and reinsurance industry,” said Susan Smith, vice president catastrophe modelling, who oversees the intern programme. “We combine on-the-job learning and formal development so that students can gain work experience and transferable skills to help them make future career decisions.

“Through short rotations in a number of Hamilton Re’s departments, students are exposed to various aspects of our business. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see first-hand the many different career options that the insurance and reinsurance industry offers.”

Two students who previously participated in Hamilton Re’s intern programme, Rachel Soares and Dominick Wright, are now fulltime employees.

“The value I have received from taking a part in the Hamilton Internship is endless,” said Soares, who is now underwriting assistant, property insurance at Hamilton Re. “If you are a hard working student with a desire to learn from a company that is constantly pushing industry boundaries, then I highly recommend applying for Hamilton’s summer internship.”

“I loved the fact that I was able to work on tasks that added real value to my team,” said Wright, now catastrophe modelling analyst at Hamilton Re. “Over the course of the internship I was able to acquire knowledge and experience that I still put to use now as an analyst.”
