Everest Re names new CEO for Bermuda business

Sanjoy Mukherjee, the managing director and chief executive officer at Everest Reinsurance Bermuda, will leave his Bermuda role on April 1, to focus on his responsibilities as general counsel and corporate secretary of Everest Re Group.

Chris Downey will take over Mukherjee’s responsibilities in Bermuda, subject to Bermuda Monetary Authority approval. Downey is currently chief underwriting officer of Everest’s reinsurance division, and will take on his new responsibilities in addition to his existing ones.

Mukherjee joined Everest in 2000 and became executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary in 2005. He took on the additional role of overseeing the Bermuda business in April of 2016.

He will work closely with Downey until April to ensure a smooth transition.

Juan Andrade, president and chief executive officer at Everest Re Group, praised Mukherjee’s role in expanding Everest’s Bermuda operations, but said his talents were now needed in the group role.

"Given the growth and diversification of our company, particularly in insurance and international, Everest will benefit from Sanjoy’s full time focus as our general counsel, helping the organisation deal with the vast complexities of our global operation,” he said.

Andrade described Downey as “a respected underwriter, and leader within Everest, who has previously spent 15 years of his career based in Bermuda.” Downey “will continue to play an increasingly important role in the future of Everest,” Andrade added.
