BILTIR runs networking event at ReFocus

Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers (BILTIR) hosted a networking event for Long Term insurance and reinsurance professionals at the ReFocus conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, on February 27.

The conference, which runs from February 26 to March 1, is jointly organised by the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) and the Society of Actuaries (SOA).

BILTIR hosted a networking breakfast for 50 industry professionals that are BILTIR members along with representatives of the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA). BILTIR was represented by Executive Director Christine Patton, Executive Adviser Curtis Dickinson, and Secretary Wenda Roberts.

On March 1, Patton will moderate a panel on the theme of ‘New Technologies to Facilitate Insurance and Reinsurance’. The panellists were Chad Hersh, Head of Worldwide Market Development, Life Insurance, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Natasha Alexeeva, CEO, Friendly.

“With an increasingly ageing population, the global life insurance and reinsurance markets face a number of opportunities to strive to meet the changing needs of policyholders seeking guarantees and flexible pension benefits as the retirement landscape changes,” said Patton. “The BILTIR team looks forward to meeting our members in Las Vegas and to hearing any challenges members are facing.”

As part of ongoing refinements, on 24 February, the BMA published a consultation paper proposing enhancements to the regulatory and supervisory regime for long-term commercial insurers and reinsurers consistent with its priority of protecting policyholders and ensuring financial stability.

BILTIR – which represents 56 life re/insurers and 21 associate members in Bermuda who provide life and annuity products and employ more than 1000 people on the island – supports the proposed enhancements.
