Athene Life Re names the winners of its Bermuda College scholarship programme

Athene Holding and Athene Life Re (ALRe) have named the 2020 recipients of the Athene Scholarship and recognised the first three graduates of the Athene Scholarship programme.

The scholarship is designed to help build the future workforce in Bermuda in areas that align with business needs and is the largest programme of its kind at Bermuda College. Eligible subjects include accounting, actuarial science, business, economics, finance, human resources, information technology, insurance and risk management, legal studies and mathematics.

The scholarships were awarded to Rickai Burrows (business); Kityra Davis (accounting); Amber Douglas (human resources); Amber Furtado (business); Nina Pickering (business); and Nadir Young (accounting).

Founded last year, the Athene Scholarship programme can be awarded to up to ten students at Bermuda College each academic year who have significant financial need and meet a minimum GPA requirement. It covers the full costs of each student’s associate degree programme and required books.

Phyllis Curtis-Tweed, vice president of academic and student affairs at Bermuda College, said the opportunity enables the recipients to focus on their studies, with last year’s winners having distinguished themselves academically. “A high bar for attainment has been set and with such generous support, much is expected,” she added.

This spring, Atiya Furqan (actuarial science) graduated as an Associate of Science from the inaugural 2019 Athene Scholarship programme with a merit. Nisha Smith (actuarial science) achieved a distinction, while Ken-nie Trott (actuarial science) achieved a merit and associate of arts. All three plan to pursue further educational opportunities.

Natasha Scotland Courcy, general counsel and co-chief operating officer of ALRe, said: “The Athene Scholarship was designed to ensure students, no matter their personal circumstances, have access to higher education opportunities. As a company, we recognise the importance in investing in our future leaders, and we are pleased to collaborate with Bermuda College on these efforts.”
