Rising Star Alexis Smith

Alexis Smith, 29, worked in the insurance industry as a cyber security and IT analyst after graduation but made the jump to cyber underwriting when she joined digital re/insurer Relm two years ago.

Give us a snapshot of your career to date.

After graduating from university, I spent 5 years working as a Security/IT Analyst at Validus Re. While immersed in the cybersecurity domain, I sought to venture into a profession that was connected to it while offering the opportunity to broaden my skill set and deepen my understanding of the insurance industry. In August 2022, I made the move to Relm Insurance, assuming the role of a Cyber Underwriter and I am still in that role to date.

How did you come to choose a career in re/insurance?

After completing my first year at university, I sought opportunities to immerse myself in the industry aligned with my studies. I was able to secure an internship at Validus Re, where I could apply and further develop the skillset acquired in university. After interning there every year until I graduated,  I was offered a full-time position at Validus Re before completing my degree.

What makes the re/insurance industry attractive to young professionals?

The industry offers plenty of ways for young professionals to develop their skills, expand their knowledge, and advance their careers. These opportunities include mentorship programmes, professional development initiatives, hands-on experience, and continuous learning opportunities.

What are the opportunities and challenges you’ve faced?

The transition from cybersecurity to underwriting presented its challenges, demanding perseverance and dedication. Despite initially possessing limited knowledge of insurance, I approached my role with a commitment to rapid adaptation and continuous learning. I am grateful for the opportunities I've had thus far, including undergoing training courses, attaining relevant designations, and participating in numerous conferences, both domestically and internationally. These experiences have played a pivotal role in shaping my professional journey and expanding my expertise.

Was there someone who inspired you or acted as a mentor in your career?

I am grateful to have been guided by numerous influential mentors throughout my journey, including my current boss, Donavan Burgess. Two particularly noteworthy mentors have significantly influenced my professional development. Firstly, in the realm of insurance, I have had the privilege of being mentored by Jasmine DeSilva, whose solution-oriented approach and unwavering support have been instrumental in my growth. Jasmine consistently encourages me to advocate for myself and persevere through challenges. Secondly, on the cybersecurity front, Kevin Mayes has been an invaluable mentor, always available to provide guidance as I navigate the dynamic landscape of cybersecurity. Kevin's mentorship extends beyond mere answers or solutions; he empowers me to tackle challenges independently while offering invaluable guidance throughout the process.

What differences does your generation bring to the industry?

Our generation recognises the significance of creativity in navigating today’s ever-changing world. In this dynamic environment, where change is constant, creativity becomes essential. Furthermore, innovation plays a key role in driving progress by introducing new perspectives and inventive problem-solving methods. This emphasis on creativity and innovation highlights our ability to adapt and succeed amidst today's challenges and opportunities.

Is the industry welcoming to younger people?

Yes, while the landscape may vary from one company to another, it is evident that the industry as a whole offers a multitude of avenues for both professional growth and continuous learning.

What are your career goals?

My aspirations extend to achieving the pinnacle of my profession, envisioning myself as a leader at the forefront of innovation and excellence. Whether it entails spearheading my own cyber underwriting team or orchestrating strategic initiatives within the dynamic realm of cybersecurity, my ultimate goal is clear: to excel in my field. My commitment to growth and skill development remains steadfast, and I am excited to see how my career unfolds.

If you had chosen a different career, what would it have been?

While cybersecurity remains my passion, if I were to explore an alternative career path, I am intrigued by the prospect of becoming a private investigator or detective. This profession would allow me to leverage my current skill set while engaging in a different aspect of problem-solving, investigation and attention to detail.
