Sompo hires Robert Haney to lead multinational crop insurance

Sompo International Holdings (SIH) has hired Robert Haney as executive chairman of AgriSompo, its multinational crop insurance platform.

Haney also becomes chief executive of Sompo International’s North American crop insurance organisation, AgriSompo North America, which will be comprised of Diversified Crop Insurance Services (DCIS) and ARMtech. Sompo’s acquisition of DCIS is scheduled to close by the end of 2020.

Haney reports to Christopher Sparro, chief executive officer of US insurance for Sompo International.

Haney began his career at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) before joining Rain and Hail, which he led for three decades. He retired as chairman of that business in 2015.

John Charman, executive chairman of SIH and chief executive of Sompo Holdings overseas insurance and reinsurance business, described Haney as “a pioneer in shaping the US crop industry over the last several decades.”

He added: “It is his absolute dedication and passion to continuously improve all aspects of the US crop business that brought Haney out of retirement to run this groundbreaking operation for Sompo International.”

Sparro called him “an inspiring leader who has a strong vision for the future of crop insurance.”

Haney said: “I believe in the long-term strategic vision for growing the company’s business and am extremely committed to establishing the premier, global leader in the crop insurance industry.”
