Markel names new head of global casualty underwriting and claims

Markel has promoted Mia Finsness to managing director of global casualty underwriting and claims. She continues to work out of the Bermuda and New York offices and still reports to Nick Conca, chief claims officer.

Finsness currently leads casualty claims at Markel for North America and the Dublin and London assurance divisions and retains these responsibilities in her new role. But she now takes on additional responsibilities, leading the casualty affiliated underwriting group. She also works alongside Robin Russo, executive vice president and chief underwriting officer, and the underwriting leadership team, to monitor current industry trends and emerging risks.

Her new role requires her to provide thought leadership on casualty insurance initiatives and supports strategic underwriting initiatives across Markel, and lead enhanced efforts on casualty catastrophe analysis and mitigation in conjunction with actuarial, risk management, and underwriting teams.

Russo praised Finsness for making “significant strides in her current role to improve underwriting and claims processes and to provide guidance and training on systemic and emerging risks topics, strategy, and policy wordings.”
