Sompo expands Madrid presence with Generali hire

Bermuda-based Sompo International is continuing to expand its presence in Spain and Portugal with the appointment of a head of property insurance in Madrid.

Jesús García Matas (pictured), formerly head of claims for Iberia and Latin America for Generali, will be head of property insurance for Iberia and will be based in Sompo’s new Madrid office. He will report to Jamie Cañellas, country manager insurance, Iberia.

Cañellas said: “I’m delighted that Jesús has joined our team. With his diverse background and extensive product and market expertise, we’re well positioned to strengthen and build relationships with clients throughout Iberia and deliver solutions that meet their needs.”

García Matas brings a decade of insurance industry experience to the role, covering property & energy underwriting, multinational programmes and claims. He has managed both underwriting and claims teams in the Iberian and Latin American regions, Sompo said.
