New hires and board member for Mosaic

Mosaic Insurance has appointed Jennifer Zhu to its board of directors. Zhu is a principal at Golden Gate Capital, the San Francisco-based private equity firm with a majority stake in the specialty insurer. She is a member of the firm’s financial services team, covering investments in insurance, asset and wealth management, fintech, and specialty finance.

“Jenn has worked closely with us in her capacity at Golden Gate Capital since our launch, so it’s fitting she now joins the Board in a more formal capacity, and she brings valuable knowledge and skills to the role,” said Mosaic co-CEO Mitch Blaser.

He added: “Her investment expertise and focused financial perspective will be highly beneficial as we continue to strategically drive Mosaic’s growth through our global platform this year.”

“It is a privilege to join Mosaic’s Board at such an exciting time for the company,” said Zhu. “I’ve enjoyed working with Mitch and Mark over the past two years and am incredibly proud of what the team has built. I look forward to working with Mosaic as it continues to grow.”

She joins six other directors, including board chair Caroline Foulger, who took up the position last year.

“I am thrilled to formally welcome Jenn to the Board, particularly as we mark International Women’s Day today,” said Foulger. “Jenn has been a regular Board attendee since Mosaic’s inception, and her formal appointment is a reflection of her valuable contributions over the last two years. Jenn and I together now comprise 40 per cent of the non-executive Board directors—which aligns well to the nearly 40-per cent female employee complement at the company. Gender balance truly runs all the way through Mosaic and is one of our many strengths.”

The news comes as Mosaic opens a new office in Singapore serving the Asia-Pacific market, supported by two new specialty underwriter hires: Benn Wilson, who will serve as regional CEO and head of Asia for Mosaic’s transactional liability division; and Edwin Chau as manager of transactional liability, who will also focus on developing the company’s M&A insurance business across the region.

Wilson has lived and worked for over 15 years in Asia, specializing in the M&A insurance sector. Before joining the industry in 2015, he was a corporate and private M&A solicitor for Ashurst LLP and in-house counsel for telecoms company Ooredoo. Chau previously spent three years at AIG, responsible for underwriting transactional liability insurance in the region. Before that, he was director at Aon’s transaction risks team for over six years.

Underwriting capacity for Mosaic’s Singapore platform is provided by the company’s Lloyd’s Syndicate 1609, managed by Asta Managing Agency.

The new office is Mosaic’s eighth since the company launched in February 2021. Its other underwriting hubs are in Bermuda, London, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Frankfurt and Dubai.

“I am delighted to have both Mosaic and Asta join the Lloyd’s Asia platform in Singapore,” said Mark Dyson, interim country manager for Singapore, and interim CEO, Lloyd’s Asia. “We have seen strong top-line and profitable growth on the platform in the previous two years, and increasing the number of Lloyd’s syndicates further strengthens our underwriting capabilities and product offerings.”
