Big turnout for Life Career Expo

Almost 350 people attended last week's second annual Life Career Expo sponsored by Athene Life Re in Bermuda.

Thursday's event at Pier 6 in Hamilton saw young Bermudians speaking about their career experiences, panels with industry experts and roundtable discussions on industry topics such as job candidate branding and the value of joining the Life industry.

The free, in-person event was designed by Athene to provide students with information about career opportunities in the life and annuity (re)insurance industry. Aimed towards young adults at the end of their high school years, the event was also open to college/university students and adults looking to make a career change, Athene said in a statement.

“We’re extremely grateful to everyone involved who made the second annual Athene Life Career Expo a success,” said Natasha Scotland Courcy, CEO of Athene Life Re. “We take pride in giving back to the Bermuda community while also providing students and young professionals insight on today’s career opportunities within the life and annuity insurance industry. Whether it’s through breakout sessions or networking, the Athene Life Career Expo offers opportunities for all backgrounds to grow professionally, and we can’t wait to see what next year’s event has in store.”

Courcy delivered both opening and closing remarks at this year’s event, along with keynote speaker Marico Thomas, owner of Thomas United Company Limited, Bermuda Hospitality Group, Four Star and GrandCare Bermuda. Both Courcy and Thomas shared their paths to success and life lessons. Courcy spoke about resilience, the importance of hard work and learning how to add value to an organization. Thomas, a prominent Bermudian business leader and CEO of Bermuda Medical Specialties Group since 2018, offered insight to his career path, how he transitioned from law enforcement to business management, and now a multi-business owner.

Guests and speakers included employees from Athene and other Bermuda-based life (re)insurance companies in various areas including actuarial, finance, legal, marketing and business development. The event opened with Courcy and Thomas’ remarks, followed by panel discussions on what Life companies do and how they function in Bermuda.

The second annual Athene Life Career Expo was made possible through support from Platinum Sponsor Martello Re and Gold Sponsors Kuvare Life Re Ltd., Prosperity Life Group, Sun Life International, Conyers, Catalina, Legal & General Reinsurance and Somerset Re.
