Carey Olsen appoints Sheba Raza to advise London-based clients on Bermudian law

Carey Olsen has strengthened the Bermudian legal capabilities of its London office by appointing corporate lawyer Sheba Raza.

Raza joins as counsel after 13 years in London with another offshore firm, and also serves as director of The Bermuda Society, which promotes and strengthens ties between Bermuda and the City of London. She is the first Bermuda-qualified lawyer to be based in Carey Olsen's London office.

Raza acts on behalf of a broad range of financial institutions and public and private companies across the insurance, energy, real estate and financial services sectors. She specialises in finance matters including insurance finance, capital markets, derivatives, general corporate lending, real estate and structured finance. She is also experienced in segregated account company structures, cross-border acquisitions, corporate reorganisations and equity investment transactions.

Raza was also admitted as a BVI solicitor in 2012. Prior to moving her legal focus offshore, she spent seven years working for leading onshore firms in the City of London, including completing secondments at Barclays Capital and BNP Paribas.

Jasmine Amaria, a partner at Carey Olsen in London, said the firm is now the only offshore law firm in London able to support clients with on-the-ground legal advice of Bermuda, BVI, Cayman, Guernsey and Jersey law, describing it as “a key differentiator."

Michael Hanson, managing partner at Carey Olsen Bermuda, added: "With the significant increase in demand we are seeing for sophisticated Bermuda law capabilities from European-based clients, [Raza’s] appointment is both exciting and timely."
