Bermuda ILS donates $5,000 to ocean science institute

Bermuda ILS, the advocacy and charitable arm of Bermuda’s insurance linked securities sector, has donated $5,000 to the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences’ new endowment and scholarship fund.

BIOS, which is now a unit of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory (ASU BIOS) of Arizona State University, said it is committed to re-imagining education at all levels, growing local educational programmes in Bermuda and expanding ASU BIOS offerings in Bermuda and to visiting students.

Tim Tetlow, education & outreach co-chair for ILS Bermuda shared his enthusiasm for this partnership said: “ILS Bermuda is pleased to demonstrate its commitment to this vision by donating $5,000 to the BIOS-ASU scholarship fund.

“We hope that this contribution will support Bermudians pursuing further education at one of the world's most innovative and technology-backed institutions.

"This is something that we at ILS Bermuda are very passionate about, demonstrated through our work with the Bermuda College Education Initiative.”

The donation was made at ILS Bermuda’s Convergence event, which took place last month in Bermuda, with a cheque presentation.

Steve Weinstein, Board Member for ASU BIOS and Chair, Itasca Re Limited said:

"The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences stands as an exceptional and invaluable institution within the Bermuda landscape.

“It enjoys a global reputation for its exceptional achievements in the realms of marine research and scientific discovery and has provided career-making opportunities to countless Bermudians throughout the years. These opportunities include access to STEM education, immersive hands-on learning, and invaluable experiential training at the BIOS facility.

“With BIOS's recent integration into the ASU family, it has created a promising avenue for Bermudians to embark on further educational journeys within the illustrious halls of ASU.”

ILS Bermuda’s donation to ASU BIOS was part of a broader education initiative, which provided a range of learning opportunities for Bermuda College students throughout the year.

With support from a wide network of mentors and facilitators from companies in the ILS sector, this year’s education programme offered learning modules in the form of lunch and learns, a resume-building session and interview practice sessions, student-mentor networking opportunities, 1:1 mentoring, several internship offerings and the ability for college students to attend Convergence and participate at the event, as well as dedicated student sessions throughout the conference.
