Guy Carpenter builds up its non-marine specialty practice with two hires

Guy Carpenter & Company has made two hires as it strengthens its non-marine specialty division.

James Johns joins Guy Carp as managing director while Joshua O’Donoghue becomes senior vice president.

Johns joins from Willis Re where he was an executive director specialising in London market property reinsurance. He has been in the industry for 30 years, in both broking and underwriting roles, and is a former global head of property at both Talbot Syndicate and Marsh UK, where he worked for 22 years.

In his new role he will operate as a leading broker and account executive specialising in providing property risk and catastrophe reinsurance solutions for a broad range of direct and facultative clients. He will be based in London and report to Stephen Firmin, managing director of non-marine specialty at Guy Carpenter, and takes up his post on August 12, 2021.

O’Donoghue joins from Aon where he was a non-marine retrocession broker, before which he was a US property reinsurance broker at Willis Re. He has also worked across a wide range of client companies in London and Bermuda.

At Guy Carp he will be a senior broker and account executive, focusing on property retrocession, as well as direct and facultative reinsurance placements. He will be based in London and report to Roland Morse, managing director of non-marine specialty, and will take up his post on November 8, 2021.

Richard Morgan, head of non-marine specialties and managing director of global specialties at Guy Carpenter, said: “The combined experience and expertise that James and Josh bring to these roles will be vital in ensuring we continue to provide truly differentiated and extensive client value. They are joining a very strong and highly respected team and their introduction will help further elevate our standing in the non-marine specialty sector.”
