AXA XL promotes long-serving underwriter to head up hull business for UK & Lloyd’s

AXA XL has promoted a long-serving executive to head up its hull business for the UK and Lloyd’s market.

David Hughes becomes head of hull for the UK and Lloyd’s on July 1, 2021, assuming responsibility for leading the business and driving the strategic, profitable development of this book of business.

Hughes has enjoyed a 25-year career in the insurance industry, having joined Sedgwick - now Marsh - as a graduate trainee in 1996. He joined AXA XL when it was Catlin as an assistant underwriter in 2003 and was promoted to class underwriter in 2006. He moved to Hong Kong to help set up the newly created Hong Kong office, before later moving to Singapore to become regional product group leader, head of marine for Asia Pacific, in 2009.

In 2013 he moved back to London to take up the role of senior class underwriter for hull and war, a role that was expanded to include marine portfolio manager in 2015.

Sundeep Khera, head of marine for the UK and Lloyd’s market and global head of hull, said Hughes’ experience of working in London, Hong Kong and Singapore “has enabled him to hone his expertise and build up a strong reputation within the global marine insurance market.”

He added: “David has been a valued member of the senior marine management team for several years. He has shown great leadership skills in his former roles and has exactly the right experience to steer the strategy of our hull business in the UK and Lloyd’s region and support our clients in managing the risks they face today and in the future.”
