Ironshore hires Hiscox exec for LatAm and Caribbean role

Bermuda-based insurer Ironshore has named Juan Melo as head of crisis management for Latin America and the Caribbean.   Melo joins Ironshore’s Miami team and will focus on the complex risk exposures of war and terrorism and kidnap and ransom (K&R) insurance. He will be based in the Miami office, reporting to Pepe Marquez, managing director for Ironshore in Latin America & Caribbean. Melo joins Ironshore from Hiscox, where he was senior vice president in Miami having also served as senior client relationship manager at Hiscox ASM in London. His 20-year career reflects expertise in underwriting various specialty lines of business for insurance entities in London and Latin America.   Upon joining the industry as vice president of casualty lines for THB Colombia Corredores de Reaseguros in Bogota, he relocated to London to serve as deputy underwriter with Lloyd’s SVB Syndicate and later as an underwriter with APJ Asset Protection Jersey.  Ironshore International’s Latin America and Caribbean division was established in 2012 and today underwrites insurance coverage throughout the regional distribution platform across all property and casualty lines of business.  Ironshore’s comprehensive K&R insurance programme provides protection against kidnap for ransom, extortion, hijacking, and wrongful detention. The programme enhancements incorporate both insurance and professional services protection through its exclusive relationship with Hazelwood Street Consultants, a global crisis management and personal security firm.   Marquez said: “Ironshore recognises the constant risk of far-reaching terrorism threat exposure and Kidnap & Ransom risks to clients throughout Latin America.   “Juan, a highly experienced, multilingual insurance executive with broad-based knowledge in underwriting specialty risks, will assume dedicated responsibility for leading our Crisis Management unit in response to today’s business realities.”
